Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is a 2007 Horror-Musical that is somewhat of a Slasher. It has a very goth, style to its kills, blood and overall cinematography. It was directed by Tim Burton, starring Johnny Depp as Sweeney Todd and Helena Carter as Mrs. Lovett. It is about a man named Benjamin Barker who was framed for a crime he didn’t commit and was sentenced to 15 years in prison, by the evil Judge Turpin for killing a sailor; however, that was just to allow the judge to exploit Todd’s wife and take their child to adopt and raise as his own.

Unfortunately, Judge Turpin locked away his daughter in her room and didn’t allow anyone to see her. After Barker came back to London, he declared that Benjamin Barker was dead and he was now Sweeney Todd, and he wanted to seek vengeance on the judge; in fact, he had the judge right at his hands at once moment in the movie, but Todd let him go, for which he resented himself for, then he came to the conclusion and decision that all people are corrupt and deserve to die. With the help of Mrs. Lovett and being in desperate need to revive her failing meat pie business, she had encouraged him to kill, and with the need of disposing of the bodies, they decided to cook the bodies into the meat pies.

The rest of the movie is a tragic, love story. Sweeney Todd is considered a Slasher movie, but also doesn’t fall into the typical Slasher tropes, such as not having a “final girl”, the masked killer, college/ high school kids, etc. However though, it does fall into the tropes of it being a human killer with the weapon of choice.

Review: Despite it not being a typical Slasher film, it was overall very good. I’m not sure if I’d want to watch another Horror-Musical style kind of movie like that, but that acting was great, blood splatter was good, and the overall story was amazing. 4/5 stars!
